People ask what a dump trailer runs, and the honest answer is that it depends a lot on where you get it. More than you'd expect. So here are real numbers, including the big box store about ten minutes up the road from me.
What Home Depot charges
The Home Depot rental center in Saratoga Springs, store #4461, lists a 7'x14' dump trailer at these rates. I pulled these straight off their site on August 24, 2026. Their page notes that pricing is estimated and subject to change, and it varies by store, so check your own before you plan around it:
- 4 hours: $187
- Per day: $249
- Per week: $747
- 4 weeks: $1,868
What I charge
Same size trailer, 7 feet by 14 feet:
- Per day: $80
- Per week: $480
- Per month: $1,200
The four-hour number is the one that gets me
Home Depot wants $187 to have that trailer for four hours. My full day is $80.
You could rent mine for two entire days, $160, and still come in $27 under what they charge for a single afternoon.
Per day they're running about three times my rate. That's $169 more, every day you have it.
Same size, different trailer
Footprint isn't the whole story. Their listing says 5,800 lbs maximum load capacity, though the spec table further down that same page says 3,500. I'll use the bigger number, since I'd rather be fair than win an argument.
Mine carries 9,800 lbs. It's a 14,000 lb GVWR trailer that weighs about 4,200 lbs empty.
So on an identical 7x14 footprint you're getting at least 4,000 more pounds of legal capacity. That matters most with material that's heavy for its size — dirt, gravel, concrete, wet sod. What Home Depot does better
I'm not going to pretend they don't have real advantages.
They deliver. I don't. If you need a trailer brought to your driveway or job site, they'll do it with a one-day minimum rental, and I genuinely can't help you there.
There are a lot of them. If you're not close to Eagle Mountain, a Home Depot probably is.
You can walk in. If one's sitting on the lot, you don't need a reservation.
Two things about their process worth knowing before you drive over: it's credit card only, no cash, and they run CLEAR identity verification against your driver's license before you can rent.
What the job actually costs
The rental is only part of the bill. Landfill fees run somewhere around $20 to $40 a load depending on what you're hauling.
A one-day garage cleanout with my trailer: $80 plus a landfill run. Call it $100 to $120 all in.
The same cleanout with theirs: $249 plus that same landfill run. So $269 to $289.

The honest bottom line
If you need it delivered, or you're nowhere near Eagle Mountain, go rent theirs. Those are real reasons and I'd rather say so than waste your afternoon.
